EMUSER is an innovative solution that provides a certified broadband satellite link for use in the railway sector.

Designed and developed by leveraging Intecs’ extensive experience in the railway industry, its deep knowledge of safety regulations and standards, and its strong technological background.

It is integrated into a solution for the detection of unexpected obstacles at level crossings and for the transmission of related alarms and diagnostics to control centers. The obstacle detection product used for the integration is SIRIO-LX, a product of the STARS Consortium.

Challenges

Safety is a crucial aspect of railway transport systems, involving various heterogeneous areas such as requirements management, technological development, and economic considerations. Finding the best compromise among numerous solutions is a key issue.

In Europe, significant investments have been made in infrastructure, particularly in the technological improvement and “automation” of railway signaling systems.

The use of satellite datalink introduces a new perspective for addressing safety issues in the railway sector by providing a fast and cost-effective solution.

The solution

The main advantages of using a broadband satellite link compared with more traditional approaches based on conventional communication channels are:

✓ Greater resilience and availability of the entire system in situations where conventional communication systems are unavailable due to natural disasters, such as floods or earthquakes, or unforeseen damage to railway infrastructure, such as derailments or copper theft;
✓ The possibility of installing and using the system even in areas not covered or only poorly covered by conventional communication networks: in such areas, for example in the Middle East or remote regions of Australia, a wired connection to the central station may not be available, and a wireless connection may offer insufficient bandwidth for transmitting real-time video sequences.

The integration of satellite and terrestrial technologies represents an effective step forward in improving the reliability, resilience, and availability of services in a critical environment such as the area surrounding the railway line.

Product features

The EMUSER product consists of:

✓ An outdoor cabinet for the management of heterogeneous transmission carriers;
✓ An extremely small satellite antenna in the Ka band.

EMUSER provides broadband connectivity using different mechanisms, depending on the system location and operating conditions:

✓ Wired connection (fiber optics);
✓ Terrestrial communication (LTE);
✓ Satellite link (Ka band).
